Chemical extraction of cannabinoids can be done in a variety of manners with varying selectivity for the target compounds. Historically four solvent-methods have been employed: compressed liquid hydrocarbons such as butane; supercritical fluid extraction; uncompressed liquid solvents such as ethanol, methanol, acetone, ‘naphtha’; and very simple food-grade solvents such as oil, butter, and glycerin. Many practitioners follow procedures that have been disseminated through Internet forums, with little regard for safety or effectiveness. In recent years, professional chemists have developed safer and more effective methods, such as supercritical fluid extraction, and some refining steps for a higher quality final product.
